Chosen People?
G-d said, "I
choose you and your descendants after you"- the Jewish people. This is the
concept of "Chosen People". What are we "chosen" for? We are chosen for
RESPONSIBILITY, not for privilege. We are not better than anyone, we are
DIFFERENT. We are chosen for the responsibility of creating a society that
lives with the reality and the values that stem from this idea of one G-d
and our relationship with Him. That society, in turn, becomes a "light onto
the nations" the model, the "moral beacon" that the whole world will
ultimately choose to emulate. Our responsibility is not to force our beliefs
onto others, nor to convert the rest of the world to Judaism, but to change
the world by setting an example. That's what it means to be chosen. We are
chosen to be the instrument for perfecting the world. It's the ultimate
cause! This is the "Mission" we inherited from Abraham.
